I saw this article posted on my sister Jenn’s Facebook page, and I thought it was a great piece to share.
I have been asked by a lot of people “Why are you no longer eating beef? Is it a diet thing? Is it something else?” For me, it is something else, it is something bigger than simply deciding not to eat beef or chicken or pork that is brought to the store from a large-scale production farm. I will still eat beef, as I have noted before, I just want to know where it came from. I will still eat fish, though I want to make sure it is fresh caught.
It is nice to see that a large company such as Target making a decision such as this. It is a decision that will likely be costly to implement, but in the end, too costly not to invest in. While Target has to partner with a not-for-profit organization to begin the process of tracking their fish, they will also have to develop new methods to trace the often complex supply chains. If a large, multinational company can make the decision to be more conscience of where their food is coming from, certainly we can do the same thing. Take the time to think about how your food got to your plate, make some small changes (an example is shopping at your local farmer’s market), and if we all make small changes, these small changes can lead to big changes. And these big changes are the changes we all need to see made.
