Heirloom tomatoes

My new favorite ingredient for dinner are heirloom tomatoes. We have been able to find them each weekend at our local farmers market at a much lower price than say Whole Foods. Not only are there many varieties of heirlooms but there are even more ways to use them. Here are a few of our recent applications.

Heirloom Caprice Salad
Simply slice the tomatoes and place on a plate with basil and mozzarella. Season with salt and pepper, drizzle with oil and Balsamic vinegar, and enjoy.

Heirloom Pizza
Simply top your pizza with slices of tomatoes and mozzarella. Bake at 475 for 10-12 minutes. Season with salt when you remove from the oven.

Heirloom And Avocado Salad
In a bowl combine chopped Heirloom and Roma tomatoes. Add half an avocado chopped. Season with salt and pepper. No oil or dressing required.

So the next time you see some oddly shaped, multicolored tomatoes at the market give them a try.  (And don’t worry, the recipes for the other dishes shown in these photos will be posted soon.)
